APPARITION STORY
The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe's apparition dates back to December 9, 1531, in Mexico. According to tradition, a Native American man named Juan Diego was on his way to attend Mass when he encountered a beautiful woman surrounded by radiant light on the Hill of Tepeyac. This woman identified herself as the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.

The Virgin Mary asked Juan Diego to convey a message to the local bishop, Juan de Zumárraga. She requested that a chapel be built on the site of her apparition, where she could show her love and compassion for all people, especially the indigenous population of Mexico. Despite being skeptical, the bishop asked Juan Diego for a sign to prove the authenticity of the apparition.

On December 12, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego again and instructed him to gather roses from the normally barren hilltop and present them to the bishop as a sign. Juan Diego followed her instructions, and when he unfolded his cloak (or "tilma") before the bishop, a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, as she had appeared to him, was imprinted on the fabric.

The image on the tilma, which is still preserved and displayed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, is believed to be a symbol of unity and divine intervention. It became a powerful catalyst for the conversion of millions of indigenous people to Christianity in the region.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is now one of the most venerated and beloved Marian apparitions in the Catholic Church, and her feast day is celebrated on December 12th each year. The apparition is seen as a sign of God's love and care for all people, regardless of their background or ethnicity, and continues to be a significant spiritual and cultural symbol for Mexicans and Catholics around the world.
